The role of O-rings

2022-02-14
O-ring is a kind of non-metallic gasket, which belongs to static seal, a common rubber ring with a circular cross-section. Similarly, O-rings are the most widely used seals in hydraulic and pneumatic systems. It has good sealing performance, and is not only commonly used in static sealing, but also in reciprocating sealing.
1. Characteristics of O-rings
First of all, its variety is rich, there are about 200 kinds of O-rings, corresponding to different working conditions.
The structure is small in size and easy to disassemble.
It has low compression set resistance, oil resistance, chemical resistance, heat and cold resistance.
It has low dynamic friction resistance and almost no leakage when used as a static seal.

2. Materials used for O-rings
Considering the stress generated when the O-ring is extruded and exerting the function of sealing, the basic performance is to maintain moderate stress with high quality within the range that does not cause abnormal deformation. There will be no major deviations. The material used depends on the performance, and it is the key to develop products for different use environments on the premise of fully utilizing the properties of polymers and original chemicals.
3. What does the O-ring do?

The sealing principle of the O-ring is to use the compressive stress of the O-ring to seal. The O-ring is inserted into the groove, and the corresponding stress occurs with the elastic recovery of the rubber, and a certain initial contact pressure Po is generated on the contact surface. Even if there is no medium pressure or the pressure is very small, the O-ring seal can be sealed by its own elastic force; when the chamber is filled with a pressurized medium, under the action of the medium pressure, the O-ring seal is displaced , moves to the low pressure side, and at the same time its elastic deformation further increases, filling and closing the gap δ.
